Boxer Steve Swinburn joins Dennis Hobson ranks

Steve Swinburn hopes to become the latest success story to come out of Dennis Hobson's stable after joining the Sheffield promoter's ranks.

The 23-year-old has switched from kick-boxing to boxing and has been training at Hobson's Fight Academy, which has featured world champions such as Ricky Hatton and Clinton Woods, plus Lincoln heavyweight Lee Swaby.

The welterweight makes his debut on Swaby's 'My Bloody Valentine' promotion at the Lincolnshire Showground's Epic Centre on February 13 and has been dividing his time between training sessions at Bracebridge ABC, Yarborough Leisure Centre and Hobson's gym in Sheffield.

He is now champing at the bit to get started.

"I went to Sheffield with Lee (Swaby) to get the ball rolling and I was really impressed with the set-up that Dennis Hobson has got," said Swinburn.

"He has a big gym and some good fighters from all around the world.

"He is a good promoter, one of the biggest and I am pleased to be with him.

"There are three shows coming up in Jersey and he wants me to be part of those. I am just going to take it one step at a time.

"For the time being I am going to concentrate on my boxing, rather than kick-boxing, and I would like to reach a good level in the domestic ranks and maybe fight for a Midlands or English title."

Swinburn has made the move after several years using both his hands and feet in the ring and believes now is the right time to try something new.

"I have been a kick-boxer for seven years and I have recently had three European title fights and lost them all. They were all very close," he said.

"I spoke to Lee (another former kick-boxer) and my trainer Dave Walker, who is my uncle, and they advised me to give it a go.

"My hands do all the damage anyway, as Lee has already said, and when I have trained for kickboxing fights, I have tended to focus more on the boxing aspect of it.

"There are a few issues in my game to iron out but I am not anticipating much of a change."
